College Democrats of New York Opposes the Trump Administration's Marginalization of the Gender Nonconforming Community

October 23, 2018-- The New York Times recently reported that the Trump Administration is rolling back the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community by redefining sex as binary (male or female), unchangeable, and determined by one’s physical anatomy at birth. Such a definition, if codified, will reverse much of the progress the LGBTQ+ community has made as of late.

The Trump Administration is attempting to force individuals to conform to a binary gender system, even though countless Americans would feel ostracized by such a narrow definition of gender. We will not stand by while the executive branch attempts to redefine sex in a way that alienates millions of Americans who identify outside the binary. If Trump’s changes are approved, the more than 1.4 million members of the gender nonconforming community in America will face further marginalization, restricted access to health care, forced usage of bathrooms that do not match their gender identities plus various other violations of their rights.

The potential social consequences of the proposed changes mean we must ensure the roll back of civil rights for the nonbinary community is stopped in its tracks. Today, tomorrow, and everyday, we at College Democrats of New York, join our gender nonconforming friends as they fight to equate transgender rights and human rights. We call on the Trump administration to stop attempting to marginalize a group as unique and important to American society as the gender nonconforming community.
