College Democrats of New York Backs NY TRUTH Act to Release the President’s Tax Returns
Donald Trump’s failure to release his tax returns breaks a 40-year precedent that built trust between the American people and their president. New York State can help rebuild that trust by passing the NY TRUTH Act.
The legislation directs the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to release the previous five years of state income tax returns of statewide elected officials, including any President and Vice President that files New York State income tax returns. President Trump’s tax returns, and worldwide income, will be made publicly available by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance within 30 days of the bill’s passage.
New York is the only actor capable of constitutionally releasing the President’s tax returns. While the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure that requires the President to disclose ten years of tax returns, the GOP-controlled Senate will block the measure from becoming law before 2020. Several states are also exploring legislation that would ban President Trump from 2020 ballots if he does not release his tax returns; unfortunately, there are many doubts regarding the constitutionality of such legislation.
All statewide elected officials in New York regularly release their tax returns; it is time for President Trump to do the same. The American people deserve to go to the polls on November 3rd, 2020 with all their questions about Donald Trump’s tax returns answered.
In both the Assembly and the State Senate, a majority of legislators have co-sponsored the NY TRUTH Act. We, as College Democrats of New York, endorse the TRUTH Act because it is the best way to give Americans the answers they deserve.
Join Assemblyman Buchwald, Senator Hoylman and College Democrats of New York for a rally at the Million Dollar Staircase in Albany’s Capitol Building on April 8th at 12 pm to urge legislators to bring the NY TRUTH Act to a vote.
