A Joint Statement on the UAW Local 2300 Strike at Cornell University
On August 18, 2024, UAW Local 2300 - which represents over 1,200 Cornell employees announced that its members would be going on strike.
Both the Cornell Democrats and the College Democrats of New York (CDNY), these workers are essential to the University; they are the engine that ensures that the University continues to function smoothly and successfully.
The striking members of UAW Local 2300 are fighting to secure a fair deal for all of their members, including a wage increase commensurate with increases in the cost of living, a greater focus on improving workplace safety, and access to no-cost parking.
Since the University Administration has failed to substantively engage with these issues, the members of Local 2300 have overwhelmingly voted to go on strike. In recent history, the Democratic Party has supported organized labor and the right of workers to organize, strike, and fight for an equitable bargain that reflects their invaluable contributions and extensive responsibilities.
The Cornell Democrats and the College Democrats of New York, unequivocally and firmly stand with and support the striking workers in their efforts to secure this fair deal.
