Response to House Republicans’ Budget Proposal
Last week, House Republicans passed a budget bill that will increase our deficit by over 1.5 trillion dollars while failing to address the cost-of-living crisis gripping our state and nation. While the proposal aims to gut funding for health & nutritional programs, it also fails to help working class Americans lower costs, pay off student loans, or get ahead.
Every House Republican from the NY Delegation voted for this budget bill, which aims to strip 880 Billion dollars in funding from Medicaid over the next 10 years while aspiring to privatize Medicare.
In the year 2025, we should be increasing access to healthcare and moving towards a single payer healthcare system that protects all Americans. But Republicans are going after the poorest Americans in order to meet their freak austerity budget, designed to funnel wealth towards people like Elon Musk and GOP megadonors.
Cutting Medicare and Medicaid is not just stupid; it’s dangerous. In Elise Stefanik’s District, 32% of residents rely on Medicaid coverage. In Ritchie Torres’ district, 67%. 53% in AOC’s district. And of the people represented by House Minority Leader Jeffries’, 49% rely on Medicaid.
New Yorkers rely on Medicare and Medicaid in order to survive. But Republicans want to slash these benefits to line their own pockets. These guys want to make your life harder.
If this budget’s proposed cuts move forward, New Yorkers can expect to be deprived of basic medical neccessities, or else be forced to pay ridiculous premiums for care that is free or low-cost in nearly every other developed country across the world. Cutting Medicare and Medicaid is a WIN for Big Pharma and the Healthcare Insurance lobbies, and a LOSS for the American People.
New York hospitals need Medicaid to stay open, including many rural hospitals in upstate New York that rely on Federal funding. Many of these hospitals are the only places capable of providing more advanced care for entire communities and counties. A cut to Medicare and Medicaid means less access to hospitals, and thus less access to healthcare, for America.
