A Joint Statement on Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination for U.N. Ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump has named Representative Elise Stefanik of New York’s 21st Congressional District as his pick for Ambassador to the United Nations.

Stefanik entered Congress as one of the youngest representatives in U.S. history, running on a moderate platform. However, she has abandoned many of the principles she stood for, leaving behind her district and supporters in the process. Stefanik claims to “Back the Blue,” yet sympathizes with January 6th rioters who assaulted 174 police officers. She claims to support democracy and our allies fighting against tyranny, yet she has voted against aid to Ukraine and refused to accept the results of the 2020 election. She claims to want to protect our borders but worked with Speaker Johnson to keep the bipartisan border bill from ever being voted on in the House.

After 10 years in power, Stefanik has not delivered for the people of her district. New York’s 21st Congressional District remains among the poorest in the state. Instead, she has used her position to reach higher power. In this election cycle, rather than spending time with her constituents, she traveled the country to campaign for Donald Trump. On election night, she was thousands of miles away from her district at Mar-a-Lago.

Now Stefanik has finally gotten what she wanted and will abandon the people of New York’s 21st Congressional District for good. She is being sent to the United Nations, despite having limited experience working in foreign policy.

Recently, Stefanik has been highly critical of the UN, claiming that it has been “allowed to rot with antisemitism.

She strongly rejects any attempt by the UN to hold Israel accountable for the Palestinian genocide, and she has called for the end of relief efforts in Gaza and the West Bank. For these reasons, we are very concerned about what this appointment means for the future of US foreign policy and our relationship with the rest of the world.

With that said, Rep. Stefanik has graced us with a massive opportunity to flip the 21st district blue for the first time in nearly 10 years. We will be working around the clock in the upcoming special election to win back the support of the abandoned district, the first step on a much longer path to securing control of the House.

If we all do our part and learn from the mistakes of 2024, we can see blue on the mountains of the Adirondacks, in the district's farms, and in the vibrant streets of our towns. As Democrats, we will prove that our party cares about the interests of the people in this district, and we look forward to supporting the candidate chosen to take this district back.
